Tucker & Dale vs. Evil — The Perfect Horror Comedy?

What would you do if you were a Hillbilly…or even half Hillbilly?

Horror exists in a balance. Too many scares without relief might be more than a body can handle. That’s why we get a little comic relief strategically placed in many of the great horror movies. And then we have one of horror’s most beloved subgenres, the horror comedy. There are some very entertaining comedic horror films out there, but there is one that stands atop the rest: Tucker & Dale vs. Evil.

Now we’re going to get some arguing amongst all the horror geeks. I think some people would put movies in this generalized subgenre that don’t really belong, like Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness. Those two movies are among my top favorites, and while they’re hilarious, I wouldn’t call them horror comedies. Those movies are more slapstick and cartoonish absurdism than straight-up comedy — there are comedy subgenres, too, so we can mix and match all day long.

I suppose if we were to aggressively sub-categorize this film, it would fit into the slasher horror comedy subgenre, but it also feels very generalized in its comedy. Perhaps it’s a comedic take on a psychological thriller, but if we dig into all that, we’ll be way out in the weeds.
